Q: I can keep three players. At this stage, I am leaning toward Marshall Faulk, Priest Holmes and Ahman Green. Should I consider one of my younger players: Onterrio Smith, DeShaun Foster, Anthony Thomas, Matt Hasselbeck, Koren Robinson, Plaxico Burress or David Boston instead?

A: Brendan Roberts recently wrote a baseball column that hit on keys for whittling down keepers. Some of his tips also apply to fantasy football. In this case, the most important suggestion is to keep the players that give you the best chance to win next season. Holmes and Green certainly qualify there, and Faulk could, too. Tickets

Green is still fairly young; he will be 27 next season. Plan on him being a factor for your team for the next few seasons. Holmes will hit the big 3-0, but because he hasn't been a starting back his entire career, there is less wear and tear on his body. Consider him a 30-year-old back with the legs of a 27-year-old. Of your top three choices, Faulk is the only one that concerns me. He will be 31 next year, and he isn't the same back he was a couple seasons ago. Faulk is still a better choice in 2004 than the other players you listed. If you do want to keep a younger player who will give you more than one or two years, Faulk is the guy to leave unprotected. The problem with that strategy is I don't see an obvious replacement among your other players. My suggestion is to keep those top three backs, but use your draft to begin planning on future keepers to take Faulk's place.
